4 Steps to get your animals from Africa to America

Step 1

• Before you come to Africa to hunt, think about what kind of mounts you would like. For
example, shoulder mounts, euros, flat skins/ rugs, half body, full body, do you want to
make pillows or rugs/runners out of the back skins.

• After you have harvested your animals, you need to tell the PH (your guide) after pictures if
you want Full body, half body, flat skin, shoulder mount, euro, or a mixture so they can
skin accordingly.

• At the end of your trip please confirm that all your animals are listed in skinning register,
and that they are listed correctly for the way you want them to be mounted. (the skinning
register is the book in the skinning shed that your PH will help you fill it out)

Step 2

• All animals will go to Nylstroom Taxidermy, for initial processing and photos. From there
you may choose to continue with Nylstroom Taxidermy, or you can have another
Taxidermy pick your animals up from Nylstroom. You or our taxidermist will need to pay Nylstroom Taxidermy for any work or storge they have provided if you choose not to use them.

• If you choose to use Nylstroom Taxidermy Jacques Swart can watch and monitor the whole process, if you choose a different taxidermist, he will not have visibility and not be able to monitor the process. Nylstroom Taxidermy also includes crating fees for all Jacques Swarts customers.

• Depending on how you arrange your trip, most of the next steps will happen through emails.
Please make sure you watch your junk and spam folder and make Nylstroom Taxidermy as
known sender.

• Mounting takes 12-16 months, Dip and Pack takes 6-10 months to be ready to crate.

• At this point you will need to choose if you want your animals mounted in Africa, or export
to an American to be mounted by your taxidermist. You have 2 export options when not mounted. You can ask your taxidermist which one they prefer.

Salted, dip-and-packed
OR
Tanned, dip-and-packed.

• At this point you will need to pay Nylstroom Taxidermy at least a deposit to get stated on
your animals.

Step 3

• Congratulations, your animals are now ready to be crated.

• If you are using Nylstroom this is included with your taxidermy cost, most taxidermist and exports charge extra to crate your animals.

• You will need to watch your emails at this points. Nylstroom will be CC you on all emails, so you know what is happening, and what you need to do.

• Your crate will then be taken to Johannesburg to an exporter near the airport

• The Exporter will then quote you 2 different ways. Ocean or Air. Jacques Swart recommends air for many reasons.

• You will then need to pay the exporter before it can leave South Africa. This should include the air fright fees as well.

Step 4

• You will need to pick a US-based import company familiar with trophies to help you clear customs and other requirements.

• Jacques Swart recommends Copper Smith. They have multiple offices in the US. If you go through San Francisco airport you can us the SFO office and they do a great job.

• Once your crate is in the US, it will need to be inspected by multiple agencies. Including Customs, US Fish and Game, and USDA. You will need to sign a Power of Attorney for Copper Smith so they can help you with this.

• Because the airport storage fees are high, you want your crate to arrive on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday to allow time to get it out and not pay for the weekend storage fees.

• Cooper Smtih will get your crate out of the airport as soon as possible and take it to a 3rd party warehouse. You will need to pay Copper Smith ASAP to avoid extra storage at the warehouse fees.

• Depending on what you have in your crate it may be required to be sent to a USDA approved taxidermist or tannery for additional inspection. Most taxidermists and tanneries charge a fee for this.

• Copper Smith can arrange delivery of your crate to you or your designated taxidermist/tannery if you don’t want to do it yourself.

• Copper Smith will send you a PDF of all the documents and permits showing that you legally imported your trophies. We recommend that you save or print these and keep them in save place.

Note: These instructions can change without notice. South Africa, United
States, or transportation agencies can all change they regulations or rules at
any time.
